ChatGPT Application Generated $2 Billion for OpenAI – 30 Times More Than All Competitors Combined
The ChatGPT mobile application has generated $2 billion for OpenAI since its launch in May 2023, a figure that is 30 times greater than the combined revenue of all its competitors. According to TechCrunch, citing data from Appfigures, the average revenue per installation stands at $2.91.
The primary growth surge occurred in 2025, with the app earning $1.35 billion in the first seven months, marking a staggering 673% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This revenue is about 30 times higher than the total revenue of competitors like Grok, Copilot, and Claude.
On average, ChatGPT brings in $193 million per month. In contrast, Grok, its closest competitor from xAI, earns just $3.6 million—approximately 1.9% of ChatGPT’s figures. Revenue per download also shows a significant disparity, with ChatGPT at $2.91 compared to Grok’s $0.75 and Copilot’s $0.28.
The United States is the largest market for the app, accounting for 38% of its revenue, followed by Germany at 5.3%. The highest number of installations came from India, which represented 13.7% of total downloads. Overall, ChatGPT has achieved 690 million downloads, while Grok has only 39.5 million.
In 2025 alone, ChatGPT saw 318 million downloads, which is 2.8 times greater than the downloads in the same period last year. The average monthly installations rose by 180%, reaching 45 million. Notably, Grok lagged in the mobile segment, releasing its iOS app only in January 2025 and its Android version in March. Experts note that the figures mentioned only account for mobile device revenues and do not include web subscriptions and API earnings.
