The International Astronomical Union has named an asteroid located in the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter after the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner.
The celestial body was originally discovered on March 10, 2003, by a team of Italian astronomers. The initiative to name the asteroid came from its original discoverers, Fabrizio Bernardi and Maura Tombelli. The Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature officially approved the proposal, designating the object as "(120097) Janniksinner."
According to the astronomers, this decision honors not only the player's phenomenal athletic achievements on the court but also the exemplary human values and character he demonstrates both inside and outside the sporting world.
The 24-year-old Sinner currently holds the World No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings. His impressive career record includes 29 ATP singles titles, four Grand Slam victories, and two ATP Finals championship titles.
