A high-level briefing was held in Ashgabat to discuss the organizational framework for the upcoming fourth International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" (2018–2028). The event provided diplomats and media representatives with comprehensive insights into the objectives and the anticipated format of this major international forum dedicated to global water challenges.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Tajikistan to Turkmenistan, Niyatbekzoda Vafo Alibek, announced that the conference is scheduled to take place in Dushanbe from May 25 to 28, 2026. Organized by the Government of Tajikistan in close coordination with the United Nations, the forum aims to accelerate global progress toward water-related goals integrated within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by fostering innovative solutions and international cooperation.

The strategic focus of the upcoming conference is divided into four pivotal areas. These include preparing for the 2026 UN Water Conference (co-chaired by Senegal and the UAE), establishing new partnerships to address priority water issues, and revitalizing the implementation of the Secretary-General’s Decade for Action plan. Furthermore, the participants will initiate discussions on the UN water agenda for the period beyond 2030, reviewing the decade's overall outcomes.

The conference is expected to draw a diverse group of participants, including government officials, international financial institutions, academic experts, and representatives from youth and women's organizations. This inclusive approach is designed to create a global platform for dialogue, ensuring that various perspectives are integrated into the future management of water resources and environmental sustainability initiatives.
