The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted a critical gap in global health security, noting that there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments for the Andes hantavirus (ANDV). The statement was made by WHO expert Anaïs Legand during a press briefing following reports of an infection on the cruise ship "MV Hondius." This virus, primarily found in South America, remains a significant concern due to its potential for person-to-person transmission, unlike many other hantavirus strains.
The international scientific community is actively engaged in researching hantaviruses to develop effective countermeasures and understand the pathogen's behavior. The WHO emphasizes that while progress is being made in virology, the Andes strain requires dedicated attention to prevent potential localized outbreaks from escalating. The organization continues to coordinate with laboratories worldwide to accelerate the development of diagnostic tools and therapeutic candidates.
Under current circumstances, the WHO stresses that timely medical intervention and supportive care are the primary means of managing the illness. Since targeted antiviral therapy is unavailable, early hospitalization and intensive symptom management are crucial for patient survival. Public health officials recommend rigorous monitoring of suspected cases and strict infection control measures as the most effective strategies to limit the spread of the virus at this time.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
