Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan Consider Restoring 5-Day Visa-Free Regime for Border Regions
During a high-level meeting between Turkmen and Kazakh regional officials, both sides supported the initiative to restore a 5-day visa-free regime for residents of border regions. This move is expected to strengthen humanitarian, cultural, and economic ties between the two neighboring countries.
On August 28, a delegation from Turkmenistan led by the Hakim of Balkan Velayat, Hojamyrat Ashyrmyradov, met with the Akim of Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Region, Nurdaulet Kilibai. The parties discussed a strategic cooperation program for 2025–2027 and emphasized opportunities in the oil and gas industry, logistics, agriculture, culture, and tourism.
The Kazakh side expressed its readiness to expand cooperation across all areas. It was noted that there are currently 20 joint ventures with Turkmen participation operating in the Mangystau region, and 35 Turkmen students are studying at local universities.
In the first half of 2025, trade turnover between Mangystau and Turkmenistan reached $9.2 million — a 19% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.
