On June 9, 2026, Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan mark the 34th anniversary of the official establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. Over the past decades, international cooperation between the two nations has steadily advanced across political, commercial, economic, and humanitarian sectors. This enduring partnership is built upon a solid foundation of shared history, linguistic proximity, and profound ethnic and cultural ties that have historically united the two nations.

In a recent demonstration of expanding cultural diplomacy, the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedow, received the Azerbaijani Minister of Culture, Adil Karimli, who arrived in Ashgabat to oversee the Days of Azerbaijani Culture. The cultural program commenced at the Mukamlar Palace of the State Cultural Center in Ashgabat and moved to the smart city of Arkadag. The regional agenda featured joint scientific symposiums, photographic exhibitions, and a collaborative gala concert featuring the world-renowned "Galkynyş" national equestrian group.

A major milestone and a physical symbol of the historical brotherhood between the two nations is the ongoing construction of a new mosque in the city of Fuzuli, Azerbaijan. The initiative to construct this religious complex as a gift to Azerbaijan was launched by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. The groundbreaking ceremony for the complex, which spans over one hectare and includes twin 40-meter minarets with a capacity for 500 worshippers, was held virtually last October with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev and heads of state from the Organization of Turkic States.

Currently, bilateral political affairs and structural cooperation are managed effectively through the respective embassies situated in both capital cities. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Ashgabat is headed by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Gismet Gozalov. Conversely, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Baku is under the leadership of the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Gurbanmammet Elyasov, with both missions actively focusing on driving strategic diplomatic objectives forward.
