An international expedition team aboard the icebreaker Polarstern has discovered a previously uncharted island in the Weddell Sea. This geographical discovery was made while researchers were studying the Larsen Ice Shelf. The ship was forced to seek shelter from harsh weather conditions in a bay near Joinville Island when the crew noticed the landmass, which had never appeared on any navigation charts.

Using drones and ultrasonic sensors, the scientists conducted a thorough survey and created a relief model of the island, which stands about 16 meters above sea level. Researchers noted that the dense ice cover and shifting floes in the area previously made it nearly impossible to distinguish the rocky island from surrounding icebergs in satellite imagery.

The expedition, which concluded on April 9, 2026, in the Falkland Islands, also recorded a significant decline in regional sea ice and an unusually rapid melting rate. Once the official naming process is complete, the exact coordinates of the new island will be integrated into all international maritime databases.
