Prominent cosmonaut and Hero of Turkmenistan, Oleg Kononenko, has been appointed as the head of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. This announcement was made by "RIA Novosti," citing the Director-General of the State Space Corporation "Roscosmos." This strategic appointment places one of the most experienced space explorers in history at the helm of the institution responsible for preparing future crews for extraterrestrial missions.

In his new role, Kononenko outlined key objectives for the development of the center. These goals include optimizing the training programs for missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and leading the structural transition required to support operations within the framework of Russia’s future orbital station. He aims to streamline management processes and integrate modern scientific research into the training curriculum to ensure that the center remains a world-class facility.

Oleg Kononenko is a legendary figure in global space exploration. In September 2024, he set a world record for the longest cumulative stay in space, totaling 1110 days, 14 hours, and 57 minutes across five separate missions. His vast expertise and firsthand knowledge of orbital living conditions are expected to significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of future manned spaceflights.

A native of Turkmenistan, Oleg Kononenko was born in 1964 in the city of Turkmenabat (formerly Chardzhou), where he spent his early years. After graduating from the Kharkiv Aviation Institute in 1988, specializing in aircraft engines, he embarked on a stellar career that has now earned him this high-level leadership position.
