Demographic Outlook: Workshop in Ashgabat Explores Turkmenistan's Growth Prospects Up to 2050
01 Aug. 10:33From July 27 to 29, 2026, the UN Building in Ashgabat hosted a strategic workshop to review the draft National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Demographic Resilience. The event was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) country office within the framework of the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026–2030 and the corresponding UNFPA Country Programme.
The consultations convened representatives from the Ministry of Education, the State Committee on Statistics, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Academy of State Service under the President of Turkmenistan, and the Union of Economists.
During the workshop, participants examined long-term population projections for Turkmenistan extending to the year 2050. Discussions centered on analyzing current demographic trends, population structures, human capital development, and strategies to increase economic participation among youth and women. Experts also evaluated the multi-sectoral impact of demographic shifts on education, healthcare, social protection systems, and the labor market.
Facilitated by UNFPA International Consultant Elena Zotova, the three-day session concluded with a consensus on the core provisions, key performance indicators, and inter-agency coordination mechanisms of the draft strategy. Clear implementation steps were subsequently outlined to refine the document for final approval.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
