China’s higher education system is undergoing a massive, structural overhaul, resulting in the cancellation or suspension of 12,200 undergraduate majors between 2021 and 2025. According to the South China Morning Post, referencing data from China's Ministry of Education, these traditional programs are being replaced by approximately 10,200 new fields of study explicitly tailored to cutting-edge technology and modern labor market demands.

This sweeping educational shift has impacted over 30% of all existing university curricula across the nation. The most substantial cuts have occurred within the humanities (such as philology and history), the arts, foreign languages, and management. Authorities note that with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and industrial automation, there is currently a severe oversupply of graduates in these fields, coupled with a sharp decline in employer demand.

The ongoing reform is specifically designed to align higher education with China's tech-driven economic strategies, focusing resources on high-priority industrial sectors. For instance, nine major universities have already established specialized programs in "embodied AI"—a branch of artificial intelligence integrated directly into physical manufacturing and engineering systems. The urgency of these reforms has been further accelerated by a youth unemployment rate that recently surpassed 16%, prompting Beijing to aggressively realign academic curricula with real-world corporate demands.
