Representatives from Armenia and Turkiye have convened a working group meeting to deliberate on the restoration of rail communication between the two countries. According to the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the session focused on identifying the necessary steps to revitalize transportation links. The discussions took place in Kars, serving as a continuation of the ongoing diplomatic efforts to normalize bilateral relations.

The primary objective of the meeting was to evaluate the technical requirements for reopening the Gyumri (Armenia) – Kars (Turkiye) railway line. Both delegations reviewed the current state of the infrastructure and discussed the potential timeline for bringing the route back into operation. This initiative is part of a broader framework of agreements reached during high-level negotiations between special envoys.

Diplomatic engagement between Ankara and Yerevan aims to fully normalize ties and reopen the borders, which have remained closed since 1993. While direct air travel has already been established, the restoration of rail transit represents a significant move toward economic integration. The process is being managed through consistent dialogue to ensure the mutual benefits of renewed logistics.

Experts believe that re-establishing the Gyumri-Kars rail link could significantly enhance regional connectivity in the South Caucasus. However, the project involves addressing substantial technical challenges due to the long-term inactivity of the tracks.
