The outgoing Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, whose executive tenure at the global body officially concludes on December 31 of this year, has strong political prospects in his home country. In an interview with the "RIA Novosti" news agency, Portuguese legal expert Alexandre Guerreiro stated that the veteran diplomat could potentially become the future President of the Portuguese Republic.

According to Guerreiro, Guterres stands a very high chance of securing the head of state position during the country's upcoming presidential elections, scheduled to take place in 2031. The primary driver behind this projection is the immense authority and deep-rooted respect the Secretary-General commands among citizens back in his homeland.

Concurrently, the political analyst noted alternative short-term paths for the departing UN chief's transition. Before the 2031 electoral cycle begins, Guterres is highly likely to leverage his extensive diplomatic portfolio by assuming a senior advisory or consultative role within prominent Portuguese national institutions or major international organizations.
